Astor Piazzolla’s music is infinitely rich in its emotional content and expressive potential. Wrought with tension, desire, tenderness, joy, playfulness, aggression, melancholy and nostalgia, it is music that speaks directly to us as human beings - as complex and emotive beings.
Such a deep part of culture and national identity, it had been said that, in Argentina, anything could be changed - except for the Tango. But Piazzolla changed Tango in Argentina and around the world with a style that he himself epitomized: the Nuevo Tango.
Piazzolla’s new tango wholeheartedly embraced the long tradition of tango that preceded him. However, Piazzolla imbued tradition with a synthesis of other styles and influences such that his music ultimately transcended the boundaries of traditional tango to become a music of its own.
Piazzolla’s most idiomatic medium was his quintet, including piano, violin, electric guitar, double bass and bandoneon. In this recording, the Malena Tango Quintet brings a fresh interpretation of this exceptional music. What makes this recording special is the artistry through which the performance of this music has been approached. A careful listener will hear that throughout the album there are simultaneously five unique interpretations of this music, but that these parallel voices are all striving towards something integral - the essence of Piazzolla, the essence of Tango.
